A RIFLE BATTALION SPECIAL {UNIT FORMING Having received many requests 'from the Maori people to be permitted to take a full share in. the Dominion's war oflort, it was announe•ed on Wednesday by the Minister of Defence < the Hon F. Jones, th*t the "Government has decided to form n rifle battalion, from members of the Maori i-ace for service in or beyorul "New Zealand, Preparations are now being made for rccruiting to commence on October 9, says a Association message from Wellington In the first instance recruiting will be open to single men between the ages of, 21 and 35. A site in the vicinity of Palmer--ston North has been selected as a 'camp site. It has also been decided that "Maoris who have already enlisted in "the special force shall be given the •option of remaining in that force or transferring to the Maori battalion . ,
