TAINUI CUP

GRANT FOR EXPENSES LAST SATURDAY'S- GAMES A meeting of the management committee of the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union was called at Taneatua last night ? the president, Mr W. S. explaining that there, were several matters to clear up and he had thought it well to deal with them promptly. Business arising out of the minutes included a reference to the Tainui Maniapoto Gup, and Mr Henderson said that on behalf of the union he congratulated the Matatua tribal team, which consisted mainly of Whakatane players, on their success. It had been rather a surprise but it was a pleasant one, He heartily congratulated the team on its excellent victory. No doubt the expenses had been very heavy ? and the union should make the promised donation. It was decided to grant the fivef guineas in question. It was stated that the Tauranga sub-union hod contributed another' five guineas. Mr I. Tunui (Poroporo) thanked the chairman for his kind and said he was sure that the Maori players appreciated them. ,Future matches would be played in Whakatane and there were challenges in already. Mr J. Hohapata (Paroa) moved a vote of thanks to the president for the consideration given to the Paroa football club, and to the Matatua representatives. This was seconded by Mr Tunui and carried. In an explanation concerning last Saturday's fixtures Mr Henderson said that a deputation from the Paroa club waited on him on Thursday morning and told him that they had nine men in the Matatua team. He had thought it would not be fair to ask a team so handicapped, to play a competition match and had released them from their engagement with City, the match to be played at a later date. This action was approved. Mr Henderson said that he then tried to get in touch with Taneatua officials to match that club against Poroporo but he had been unable to do so until after lunch time on Friday when Taneatua was unable to get a team- out. He thought the best thing to do would be to drop last Saturday's fixtures until later on. Mb T. Gee (Taneatua) thanked the president for the generous way he had taken the matter. He himself knew nothing about the hitch in the arrangements until afterwards.
