DEFACING HISTORY
WHAKATANE APATHY DEPLORED VANDALISM ON HILLCREST "The other day I was reading a book which dealt with certain rocks of historical interest in the Whnkatane River. I made some and discovered that the harbour board had blasted them out years ago to make groynes. Look up on the clilFs and see what is happening there. That Avondcrful skyline i,s being defaced with houses, quarries and-beer signs," said Mr C. C. Southej- at a meeting of the local centcnnial committee in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday night. ''There seems to be no historical sense or interest in the past in Whakatane. You can take that down and publish it,'-' said Mr Southey turning to the pressman. He added that steps should even now be taken to preserve what was left. The chain of oldtime pa along the cliiTs should have been a reserve. "Not only does Whakatane ignore its history but it goes out of the way to deface it," he added. Other speakers agreed with Mr Southey.
