DRAIN AGE RATES
PENALTY TO STAND BLANKET POSTPONEMENT REFUSED The request for the postponement of the ten per cent penalty on drainage rates has not been according to information received by Mr J. W. Sumner, chairman of the | liangitaiki Land Drainage Ratepayers Association, from the Hon W. Lee Martin, acting Minister of Lands. The Minister adds that it is open for individual ratepayers to apply for a postponement or a remission of the charge; their" cases will then be inL vestigated and each case considered on it,s merits. In acknowledging receipt of Mr Sumner's letter on June 20th, requesting that the imposition of the penalty be postponed until November 30th, the Minister 1 says he regrets that this cannot be agreed to as there is not sufficient authority in Section 54 of the Statutes Amendment Act 1938, to grant such a blan*< kct concession. ; Mr Martin .says that he appreciates the fact that some of the ratepayers may not be able to pay their drainage rates during the winter months, but he points out that the 1938-31) rates became due six months ago. If the imposition of the penalty causes undue hardship in particular cases it is open for the ratepayers concerned. to apply for a postponer mcnt or remission, of the charge. Their case? will then be investigated . and each case considered on its nier- J its.
