BACON FLITCHES
EXHIBITS AT THE SHOW
POPULAR COMPETITION
One of the chief sources of interest at tlie Show, was the scries of com. petitions run by the Bay of Plenity District Pig Council and the PMA The fun centred round a stall at the eastern end of the building, from which rose the delicious aroma of a score of well cured bacon sides. The whole of the stall contents were raffled for the benefit of prize money at the next A. and P. Show, and the popularity of the competitions was demonstrated by the hectic time enjoyed by the two attendants who were endeavouring to meet the public demand for tickets. Behind the appetising display, lies an interesting .story. The bacon on display was actually from prize winning anihials at the last A. and P. Show. When killed and dressed, they were judged again on the hooks by Government graders and grouped afresh. It was rather surprising to note the variation in some instances" between the live and the killed awards. As the property of the association the bacons were raffled 1 a.sl show in order to meet all expenses and t-o institute a better range- of orize money for the next Summer Show. It is pleasing to note that t 1 experiment was in every way success ful. Further than that, the idea was an educational one and district farmers evinced a keen, and lively interest n the varying stages of the exhibit, r rom a practical and informative side.
