HEADS PARK
o WORK OF CLEARING SITE THE CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL A column of smoke from near tlie Heads shows that work is now under way in the: preparation of the site for the Centennial Park which will be the county and borough of Whakatajie's jpint memorial to mark the first 100 years of white settlement in New Zealand. Ironically enougn Maori workmen were doing the work of splitting and burning logs yesterday. The park will extend from a poin'c near the flat rock to another spot several chains seaward of the harbourmaster's residence. At present it is littered with the driftwood of years but this is being cleared away and the site will be levelled and grad ed. A curving concrete wall will follow the shore line. It will be about four feet high and the ground will be made up inside it. The present road is to be widened and extended along the front of the signal station and brought round under the cliff on the seaward side. The slope of the cliff will be cut back to give' room for car parking. Trees'" and grass will be planted; and advice on the best types for the hard conditions which preva'l in this expose l , spot has been given" fcly an agricultural department olficial.
