'I'll address is headed "To Walter Reid 1!) 11 to IMS" and the v. i itten. portion is surrounded by dccora. tivc panels and medallions, shewing a farming -scene, a team, of horses, trees and a mountain stream and a, grader, planer and a truck, with pohutukawa Howe:-: in effective colour contrast. Wording It bears the following wording: 'The ratepayers of the Whakatane County Council desire to express to you their deep appreciation, for the many years of assiduous care which you have given to the control ol their affairs'. "As county chairman for 20 years and prior to that as councillor for six years, you have established a record of public service which has earned the gratitude and respect of all those whom you have served so wel!.," "Great Sacrifices" "We are aware that your careful attention to the duties of publL' life lias involved great personal sacrifices on your part, and for these and for the conscientious and benevolent manner Hi which you have carried out these duties, we convey to you our gratitude.^/'' "The affairs of the county under your administration have developed and prospered to a very marked degree, and we feel that our thanks are due to you for this happy result. "Upon laying down the reins pf oiVice we trust that you mav long be s.parcd to enjoy the fruity of you" labours, and feel sure that those who come after will realise what they owe to you and your colleagues as pioneers of this fa-ir land.'' 29 Signatures The signatures to the address were those of Messrs J. Council's Good Wishes In making the presentation the chairman said: "Mr Maurice Reid: We have asked you to attend here to receive this address as a ranrk of -the appreciate.'! of the services of your father. We/ deeply regret that your father is not able to be here personally, and we sincerely trust his unfortunate iLL ncss may end in a speedy recovery and that he may regain his health and happiness in his old age. •'Please convey to him our deep regrcits in his illness and, ou* deep appreciation of all that he has done for the council. I hope this illuminated address will be a token to him for many years to come showing tVit the people do appreciate very much the fine loyal service he has givon. "I don't want you to make speech bu,t if you will convey these remarks to your father we will appreciate it, ? said Mr Mcculloch, handing the address to Mr Reid. "Tell him that one and ail we do appreciate his services very much."
