The game was a typical forward one throughout, the packs appearing to be keen and fit. Poroporo made the first onslaught and gave Star some anxious moments while it was obvious that the blue and whites were not going to be allowed to repeat 'the walkover of the previous week. Kelly opened the score aeeoun'with an unconverted try in the corner which Star was quick to avenge Thorburn going through at the head of a forward group and touching down. The try went unconverted. Poroporo 3, Star 3. The next try came from Martin who touched down after a solo run through the opposition shortly before ha]f time. The light blue jerseys dominated the second lia.lf the forwards work, ing like a machine and bustling through to the twcinty-five line. From a loose scrum in front of blues goal Ijer dashed through to score, Mason converting with a beautiful kick. Hard keen football ensued Star defending solidly in the face of swift forward attacks. The blue and whites responded by swinging their back line into action and Thorburn taking advantage of the bounce set sail for the line and touched down behind the posts. The same man converted and the game ended Poroporo 11, Star 8. Mr J. Denham was referee. OLD BOYS v PAROA Old Boys scored their first point im the junior competition on Saturday when they played Paroa on Xo. 2 ground at Whakatane. The 'game ended in a draw. Paroa score was one unconverted try and two penalty 'goals. Old Boys secured two tries unconverted and one penalty—nine ' points all. The game was played in ?|aite a good spirit by Maori and Pakeha and both teams from the outset made the game a willing go. J. Hapopa wo-s easily the best forward for Paroa although the others worked hard. The outstanding backs were Kor a King, W. Awa, S. Mold | and K. Keepa. The Old Boys made j many mistakes offside play particularly as well a.s bad tnekiiog, all but three of the players trying to part the Paroa's boys hair. Those mistakes when remedied will make Old Bovs a hard team to beat. The : forwards didn't play as well as they did last week and the best of them were Cleland, Harrison and Dean.
