COMMITTEE REPORTS FOR COUNCIL Minutes of the meetings of the finance and works committees of the Whakatane Borough Council were presented at the council's meeting on Monday evening. The finance committee report stated tliat the question, of the licensing of foodsellers premises, a,s requested by the Department of Health, was further considered and that it was resolved that consideration should be further deferred pending receipt of information requested from the department. The question of the adoption of a suitable by-law to regulate the number of taxi cabs in the borough was considered. The clerk on conversations with, principals '"of the principal taxi companies in the borough. It was a recommendation to the council that a by-law be passed on lines similar to that in operation in Wellington, and that the local limit of taxi licenses be ten. It was recommended that accounts totalling £1744 16s be passed for payment. At the meeting of the works committee, among other matters the position with respect to the construction of a street connecting Salonika Street with King Street, the subdivision of the adjoining lands for state housing and the communication from the Director of Housing Construction, on these mattens were considered. Estimates before the committee showed that it would cost £908 for drainage and water reticulation, and £200 additional for electricity reticulation..

It was resolved to recommend that the council reply* to the department advising the estimated costs of road construction etc. and intimating that the council is interested and would like to see the work gone on with, and advising that the council regrets that it is unable' to see its way to meet more than 25 per cent of the roading costs, etc. and making an offer to meet this percentage of costs,. It was resolved that the borough foreman be instructed to inspect all water connections to premises before trenches are covered in and that the local plumbers be advised i that trenches for water mains are not to be filled in until the watei* pipes are inspected and tested. Where necessary the council confirmed these recommendations.
