The sequel to a serious accident in King Street on February 10 came on Wednesday when E, J. Nowland, Pub. lie Works Department labourer, was charged before Mr E. !<• Walton,, S.M., with negligent driving and failing to carry a warrant of fitness. Nowland did not but in a statement to the police said he was driving into Whakatane on the evening in question., Two cars w r ere approaching him and he cßpped his headlights, but they did not dip theirs. He was dazzled by the lights. He was crossing a small concrete bridge when he first saw a pedestrian on the road five or six yards ahead. He braked and swung to the right, hitting the man with a light impact. He pulled up a few yards past the man and took the injured man to hospital, later waiting for the police. Nowland said he was on his correct side of the road. He was dazzled by the lights. He had had two handles of beer at 5.30 p.m. but he was per. fcctly sober. His warrant of fitness had expired at Christmas. "In view of the fact that liquor is involved,'' said Mr Walton, '*1 will fine him £5 and costs." Lack of the warrant ®f fitness cost Nowland 10s and costs. « ■ ■ k 1
