hurinui shield —o — APANUIHOLDERS ZONE COMPETITION PLAN .FAILS - Attempts by the Te Puke SubUnion representatives to introduce n scheme for a zoned Hurinui Shield competition led to a long discussion at the annual meeting of the Bay ot Plenty Rugby Union on Saturady. Failing to have the scheme considered at the meeting, the Te Pulw representatives attempted to introduce a notice of motion and call a special general meeting on the subgect, but after the feeling of the meeting was tested the motion was withdrawn. Mr Ryan (Te Puke) initiated the discussion by proposing that the subunions be zoned into two divisions each division to play a competition, and the zone winners to meet. He said this would improve the standard of football. AN OLD PLAN Mr W. S. Burrett, chairman, said that this matter had been, gone into before, and he thought further consideration of the plan would be useless. Mr Guinness (Tauranga) said Rangitaiki had stipulated that they must have the last challenge. That barred the experiment proposed by Te Puke Mr L. Clarke (Rotorua) had no wish to strike a discordant note, but; he wanted to have a piece of Rangitaiki. What was behind the Rangltaiki offer? "The shield has ruined our club football,,'' said Mr H. Anderson (Rangitaiki).. "We intend to reorgani.se

our club football. Wc don't care if we never see the dashed shield again Mr Clarke thought Rangitaiki should come into the draw or Ap*nul should be the first holders. SPECIAL MEETING Mr Ryan, then moved that a sp'.-cia! general meeting should be held to consider the zoning plan. Mr Burrett doubted the wisdom of this. Unions had been circularised asking for comment and it was late to come forward now. Mr W. Bird (Galatea) said hi£ sub. union, had thought the matter would be discussed at the meeting and if it was going to be dodged lie favoured a special meeting. The president pointed out that the notice of motion must be in writiug. While the Te Puke representatives prepared it the meeting decided to select the first holders of the shield by ballot, the choice falling on; Apanul. Later the notice of motion was handed to the chairman. It there was anything to bririJj. forv f.rd at the proposed meeting he said Te. Puke should put their sut*gestio i down in black and white. lESENTED CHAIRMAN'S ATTITUDE ! Ryan said he resented the atti. ttitv of the chairman which seemed to -)e tc throw cold water on the subject. The question could be discussed there and then. Mr Hylton said he agreed with the chairman. His opinion was that the scheme was good, but unless there! was some signs of agreement among other unions it was little use in calling a meeting.

Mr A. Spratt said the Te Puke Union was of the opinion'that the / matter could be dealt with immediately. However they were ready to listen to the opinion of the meeting. Mr Hylton moved that the meeting should consider the plan in order to avoid the necessity of calling another meeting. Mr L. Dixon (Rotorua) said he thought the delegates should go back and thrash the matter out before their own unions. Mr L. Clarke said if the motion were carried there would be no blue ribbon of rugby in the Bay. If another shield were presented as a chal lengc trophy the Hurinui Shield would sink to the level of the Parata Cup. Mr Riini (Apanui) said the consent of the donors would be necessary before changing the conditions of the shield. Te Puke finally agreed to take the meeting's feeling as to whether the special meeting should be held and this was lost on a show of n^nds.

When we had a football photo thy chaps from the country turned up but many of the fellows from Whakatane did not. There Is a lack of en_ thusiasm in Whakatane and unt"H that is solved I cannot accept a position as coach or club captain*''— Mr Lance Preston, at the annuaj meeting of the Whakatane Rugby Football Club on Tuesday. It was agreed his remarks were largely justified.
