weekly, and it was issued under the partnership until 1930 when Mr Bullen rejoined the staff of the "New Zealand Herald.*' PERIOD OF EXPANSION In 1935 Mr Beckett who was managing editor took the bold step of publishing as a daily newspaper under the title of the "Bay of Plenty Press" and extended its circulation to Opotiki and Te Puke. Mr Beckett became manager, and the editor was Mr R. Alexander a veteran newspaper man whose ability and personality 'i quickly gained him many friends. • In the period of expansion the plant and premises of the East Coast i Guardian were acquired and a # branch ofTicc was opened in Te v Puke. In 1938 Mr Alexander died suddenly and Mr Beckett took over his duties. A local company had heon _ formed some time before this ' the paper carried on until the ginning of this year. At the end of V - January Mr Beckett resigned his position, and Mr .Frank Nathan, an East Coast journalist succeeded him. However, the shareholders decided that the company's position was too involved for the business to be continued, and the gallant r>v ture ended on February -14, 32 years after the "Whakatanen|Hfcr rinnn fix Wmr
