CENTENNIAL -NOT CENTENARY Although good reasons have been given for the Government's selection of ''centennial"' as a noun in preference to the variously pronounced word "centenary," many folk, including some in official positions, cling to "centenary" (states "New Zealand Centennial News'"). PETROL PUMP. Support was promised by the borough council for an application iy Armstrong and Co to erect another petrol pump at their garage. The Mayor said that the council had sup ported every other application, and the Government bureau had turned them all down. It seemed futilo to send applications. However, it was agreed that the council should support the request. KATHLEEN MAVOURNEEN. "It's a case of waiting'' said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, a t the borough council meeting on Monday night when correspondence from tl-.e Postmaster-General confirmed the fact that plans for the erection of a new post office in Whakatane were in coursc of preparation but that delay was inevitable. STOLE FROM MATE Bernard Martin, a native pleaded guilty to three charge. l - of theft, each involving the sum of £1 from G. A. Nicholls, when he appeared before Mr E. L. Walton. S. M., on Wednesday. The police said Martin had a key to Nicholls' suitcase and took whenever he needed it. Res. titutiurtjhttd been made of the money. Martin was fined £2 on each charge. HOTEL FOOTPATH. In answer to a question, from Ct A. J. Canning at Monday nights meeting of the Whakatane .Borough Council the borough foreman, Mr W. S. Henderson, said that the new footpatjh outside the Whakataiye. Hotel shops was being laid to mal:e sure of a suitable crossfall. The contractors had refused to pay £11, the full cost of the work, but an offer of £7 10s for patching had been accepted. LESSON FROM FATALITY.. The need for a fence at the spot on the Hillcrest Road where a recent fatal motor accident occurred was mentioned by Cr W. Sullivan at the borough council meeting on Monday, night. Mr Henderson reported that he had inspected the spot with Mr H. N„ McDonald, the Main Highways foreman. and he had been told that there was a considerable sum of money available for protective fencing and work would be carried out there. On Cr C. G. Caisley's motion it w a s dc_ cided to write to the Automobile Association and ask for a warning sign to be erected. ALEXANDRIA AVENUE., Mr R. H. Ronanyne,, district Public Works engineer, has Avritten to the borough council stating thai. Alexandria Avenue will be maintained in the same state as the de.' partment found it, but that it is impossible to seal it.
