An Explanation

The Name "BEACON" ■ ! 1. — ACQUAINTING OUR READERS In answer to numerous inquiries as to the reason for naming the BEACON, by a somewhat unusual and singular title, we feel that a brief explanation will be of interest to our readers. Actually there is no other publica. ' Sbu i in this country that has a simi- ' lar title, and a glance through a 1 complete list of American and Canad--5 ian newspapers indicates that there is no parallel for the time in either ' of those countries. However there re. mains the off-chance that a similarly named paper may exist in the Eng-lish-speaking world though as far as i can be ascertained it is not numbered i among the better known publications. In selecting 'the BEACON' as a ' name the directors were guided main- - ly by an endeavour to discover something that would be applicable to the 4 town and at the same time arresting in its singularity. Being a coastal town with a future as a resort and "as a port of call Whakatane was pecu." liarly adapted to a name that spoke ■ of the sea and of a friendly land ' signil to passing vessels. A beacon ! itself is in the ordinary course of ■ events an illumination standard, erected- for the purpose of lighting . the waj r , or showing the path. Its i beams penetrate the darkness, revealing the farthest comers and shedding light on every movement and activity that takes place within its arc. It was with this interpretation in mind that the decision was arrived at to call the new paper 'The Beacon.' It will be the endeavour of the company to live up to the correct interpretation of the Avord at all times and by close attention to the functioning of a local newspaper provide its readers Avith a genuine reflection of actiA'ities in town and country.
