February 22. Purchase of Suez Canal Shares. Defeat of the Carlists. London, February 22. The House of Commons voted the amount necessary for the purchase of the Khedive's shares in the Suez Canal. Gladstone and Lowe attacked the details of the transaction, but defended the purchase itself as a political act calculated to strengthen the Empire. Alfonso is triumphant over the Carlists in Spain. The latter are flying to the French frontier. The French elections resulted in triumph for the Moderate Republicans. Minister Buffet, defeated, has resigned.
