Battledress Unlikely To Make Australian Trip

(0.c.) HAWERA, Wednesday. Bleak wintry conditions prevailed at Hawera this morning, but some interesting work was performed. • Battledress, the N.Z. Derby winner, wa* given his Jirst fast work since resuming. After pacing a round he came home the last three furlongs in 42}s very conifortablv, his last furlong being the fastest. Battledress is in great shape, and although his owner and trainer would like to latfkle Australia the chances of him going across for the Melbourne Cup are unlikely. The horses to race as three-year-olds, Peter's Choice, Clarice, War Effort, Corday. Lady Pippin, Gay Theio and Valsheen, are attracting keen interest in their work. This morning the course proper was available for the fast work and some useful sprinting took place by these youngsters, who are expected to perform prominently this coming season. Satisfactory Sprints War Effort and Peter's Choice, which have developed splendidly, sprinted three furlongs in 411s, coming home solidly together and running the last two furlongs in 265. Clarice went comfortably over three in 425. Clarice has grown into a fine-looking mare, and looks capable of winning in any company. The English-bred filly, Lady Pippin, has made good progress and went attractively over three furlongs in a tick under 425. Gay Theio put plenty of dash into his sprint over two furlongs, registering 25Js. The workouts of the foregoing were very satisfactory, and their progress will be keenly watched. Chiltern and Cetawayo have got through a Jot of solid work, and are well forward. The maiden, Bunsby, is again working well, and should soon win his way out of novice class. Panoni is expected on the tracks any day now. NIGHT DRESS KILLED CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Night Dress, which was to make a reappearance in the Longbeach Hurdles on Saturday, fell and broke his neck while schooling this morning at Riccarton. His rider, G. Barr, sustained an injured shoulder. TOPICAL COMMENT A LONG INTERVAL The win of the former New Zealander, Yours Truly, at the Ascot meeting in Sydney on Saturday was his first succer.s since early in the season, when he won the Victoria Park Handicap, on August 13 last year. NOT POSSIBLE Back in 1933 Gay Boa was beaten into third piace in the Hadlow Hack and Hunters' Hurdles at Washdyke prior to bringing off a big surprise in the Winter Cup. History will not be repeated this year,, none of Saturday's candidates in the hurdle event at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting aspiring in that direction. BROUGHTON ON THE CHAMP W. J. Broughton, who has been previously associated with The Champ, will ride the Defoe gelding in the Brabazon Handicap on Saturday, and also in the Winter Cup. Broughton has been on the winner of two Winter Cups, Catalogue in 1937 and Lady Tinkle two years ago, and his mounts are always well fancied by the public. FOXIANA SCHOOLS WELL Contrary to reports that have been circulated, Foxiana was absent from the tracks only one morning following the knock he got on the second day at the Wellington meeting. On Saturday morning, with D. W. Redstone in the saddle, he was sent over the country at Awapuni without taking on the logs and the sod wall. OWNERS' REMINDER To-morrow: Acceptances, Thames Jockey Club.
