ISABELLA POINTER

CHURCHILL HANDICAP

TROTTING AT EPSOM

In fine, though dull, weather the Auckland Trotting Club's patriotic meeting was held at Epsom to-daj'. The track was holding and the a - tendance fair. Results: — Having his second run Red Surprise, which was supported at the last meeting here, but failed to ge>. in the money, showed improvemen to-day to win the Navy Handicap. He shared the lead with Win Thru from barrier rise and won nicely at the end from Alvis. Home Guard was made a solid favourite and showed a lot of speed at various stages of the race, but spoiled what might have been excellent prospects by breaking very badly on three occasions. There was little between Win Thru and Red Surprise with a round to go, and they were thi ee lengths clear of Alvis with Kaipaki Bill and Paul Parrish a few lengths further back. There was no change in the order down the back or across the top, and Win Thru was a shade in front as they turned for home. In a good run down the stiaignt Red Surprise did best to win by a neck from Alvis with Win Thru half a length further back and Kaipaki Bill a couple of lengths behind fourth. Distanced for Galloping For an odds-on favourite the Jack Potts filly Hilda Potts really .gave an inglorious display in the Air Force Handicap. She was very slow to leave the mark and immediately went into a gallop, losing about four seconds before she settled down. Smith drove her patiently after that, but she went fast in the back stretch to take the lead a quarter of a mile from home. However, Jewel Junior kept at her and when the pressure was applied in the straight she broke verv badly and galloped almost to the post. The winner was Jewel Junior, which showed promising form at the Manawatu meeting at Ashhurst a few months ago. He was taken into a prominent position early and was never further back than fourth. He joined issue with the favourite just before the straight was entered and won like a fair novice by a length and a half from Sumana. The last named led out early and passing the stand was with Mihini Tere, Jewel Junior, Shining Link and Seven Thirty. There was no material change in this bunch over the next few furlongs and it was left to Hilda Potts to create a diversion by running round the field to take the lead from Sumana, with Shining Link, Jewel Junior and Mihini Tere close handy. There was very little between this quintet as they straightened up, and when Hilda Potts disgraced herself Sumana stayed on nicely to take second place a length clear of Hilda Potts and Shining Link, both of which were almost in line.

After the race the judicial committee met and distanced Hilda Potts for galloping, Shining Link, which finished fourth, being awarded third place. Rockfel Scores Nicely Prince Parrish attempted to lead all the w r ay in the Army Handicap, but he weakened a furlong from home and only finished third. Karnak was made a very warm each way favourite, and when she ran up smartly on the home turn to take the lead she looked the likely winner, but, like Prince Parrish, weakened in the home stretch and was beaten rather easily by the second favourite, Rockfel, which finished very strongly on the inside of Karnak. Fly Across and Dunkirk followed Prince Parrish early and when they entered upon the last half mile Karnak had moved into fourth place ahead of Scrounger which had been very slow to leave the mark, losing about four seconds. Scrounger and Dunkirk lost ground entering the top stretch, and Prince 1 arrish, Rockfel, and Karnak (the last-named on the outside) were T ter ?- s c as - X t' ey straightened up. Silk Lad\ finished on nicelv to take fourth place just ahead of'Flv Parrish P unkirk - wi th Modern and Scrounger next.

Narbada dropped out of it at tins stage, and shortly afterwards Cavalryman lost ground. Princess Linnett appeared to have the race won when she turned for home but Isabella Poinfer outstayed her in the last half furlong, while Cavalryman struggled on into third pace Eighteen Carat was fourth, and then came Belfast Jack and Petite Jewel.
