OBITUARY
MR. C. V. HOUGHTON The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Vince Houghton, aged 85. of Gladstone Road, Parnell. Born near Kettering, in Northamptonshire, Mr. Houghton came to New Zealand as a child with his parents. His father was a pioneer settler in the Kaipara district and later moved to the Waikato. Mr. Houghton was educated at Auckland College and Grammar School, and in 1872 became ajunior clerk in the office of the Auckland Freight Company, a chartering organisation which, in co-operation with interests in Christchurch, inaugurated the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited. Mr. Houghton was transferred to the new company's staff and later became chief clerk and accountant.
In 1882, six months after he was appointed agent at Timaru, he became manager of the Waikato Coal and Shipping Company. Four years later he rejoined the New Zealand Shipping Company as Auckland manager, retiring in 1922. During the Great War he was chairman of the local overseas shipping committee.
In 1905, Mr. Houghton became a director of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Limited, serving on the board without a break for the remainder of his life, and was chairman for a year in 1930-31. He was a member of the Northern Club. Mr. Houghton was twice married, and had been a widower since 1938. He is survived by one daughter, one granddaughter, and two great-grand-children.
