STILL FLOURISHES?

TOHUNGAISM AMONG MAORIS (0.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. Tohungaism still flourishes among Maoris in Taranaki, according to evidence given at an inquest into the death of a Maori child, Marlene Davis, aged 17 months, at Hawera. The coroner, Mr. A. Grant, granted an adjournment to enable the police to make further inquiries. Mirika Wehipeihana, district nurse, said that when she visited the child at the house of its parents, William and Violet Davis, of Otakeho, she found the child suffering from pneumonia. When she advised treatment she was informed that the child was receiving treatment administered by the mother. "I warned Davis that if anything happened to the child and he had not called a doctor it might be a serious matter for him." witness continued. "My reason for warning him was that it was evident to me that the parents did not want to call in a doctor." In her opinion the child should have had medical treatment. She had found that tohungaism was operating very freely among certain classes of Maoris in this particular district and they were reluctant to have medical advice.
