MUSEUM ACTIVITIES

Owing to blackout and travel restrictions, it was decided to discontinue for the present the weeknight lectures which have been held at the War Memorial Museum during past years. Attendances had been poor during the last series. However, special lectures would be given from time to time. The Sunday lectures would continue to be given, and would begin in September.

Warm praise was given at the meeting to Mr. A. W. B. Powell for his recently published work, "The New Zealand Recent and Fossil Mollusca of the Family Turridae." Speakers said it was a work of great scientific value, not only to New Zealand, but to the whole world. It was beautifully illustrated with full page plates, and gave full details of the hundreds of varieties of shell fish.

The acting-director's report stated that a third shelter for museum specimens had been constructed. Some of the carvings in the underground shelter had been affected by dampness and low temperatures, and it had been necessary to treat them for dry rot and fungoid growths before removing them to a drier place. No permanent damage had been done, and the hulk of material in the shelter showed no signs of deterioration.
