SQUARE PEGS

In the Star of July 17 the mention is made of a young man who. although willing to serve in the navy or the air force, was sent to gaol for refusing to return to the army, from which he had already been transferred to the air force. Rather than allow him to enter a field of service where his abilities could be used to advantage, the powers that be de'L to P ut * n gaol, where he will be a dead loss to the country at a time when every penny and every ounce of effort are needed to win the war for freedom and justice. Hundreds of men on the air force reserve, including myself, have been returned to the army, temporarilv put indefinitely, our pre-entry training being cancelled in the meantime. I would like to suggest that, when a man in this position is so keen to serve in a capacity for which he i that his education or natural ability best fit him, surely he should he given a chance to prove his worth. One volunteer is worth many conscripts, but a man in prison is neither. SQUARE PEG.
