SAFETY FIRST
Last Friday morning I was the conductor on a tram proceeding towards Newmarket just before 8 a.m. We stopped at the Blind Institute to let off and help across the road some blind men, my mate helping one at his end of the car and I three others across the road from my end. Just as we were a few feet from the footpath along came a car which did not attempt to stop to let those blind men on to the footpath in safety, so I had to pull them back a little to allow trie car to pass right on. I think there Is a notice on the post at the corner near the institute warning motorists to pull up and watch for blind people who may be alighting from or getting on trams. Perhaps the driver to whom I refer has not read or seen it. If that is so, he will have to be excused this time, but it should not happen again. I would also like to mention the fact that some motorists have a habit of crawling alongside a tram when it is stopped at a suburban stop past the rear platform. If a person on the car notices just as it pulls up that it is his stop and goes to the rear end of the car to get off he may run into danger. I do think motorists should be more considerate and pull up at least three feet behind the rear end of the tram and not move until they see the tram move off again.
JUST A CONDUCTOR,
