NEW AWARD
THEATRE EMPLOYEES
An award has been made by the Arbitration Court for picture and other theatre emplovees under the title of Front-of-the-House Employees' award. It fixes minimum rates of pay for attendants in picture theatres at £4 10/ a week for males, £2 6/ for females and 5/6 a performance for performance workers. The award fixes a maximum of 36 hours a week for ticket-takers, doorkeeDers, ushers and other attendants, and 32 hours for ticket-sellers. In no case can more than six hours be worked on any one day without payment of overtime.
For vaudeville and concert and similar work the performance rate is fixed at 6/. and the hours at 2i nightly, two for a matinee for ticketsellers, three for "spruikers," and four for other theatre attendants. Dance hall wages are fixed at 15/ a performance, and hours at no more than six continuously. Caretakers in all instances are awarded a minimum wage of £5 a week; male cleaners, £4 10/; female cleaners, £2 15/; casual male cleaners, 2/4 an hour, and casual female cleaners, 1/9. Hours are fixed at 40 a week.
In a dissenting opinion, Mr. A. L. Monteith, employees' representative, expresses the view that rates for casuals and female weekly workers and female cleaners were insufficient, being less than for other like workers in New Zealand.
