THEFT OF SHOES

SAILORS BEFORE COURT Peter Walder (26) and Robert Dodds (30), bluejackets, were dealt with by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court to-day on a charge of theft. Walder was charged with stealing 11 pairs of shoes valued at £14 7/3, and Dodds with theft of one pair of shoes valued at £2 5/, the property of H. M. Wade. Each pleaded guilty. Sub - Inspector Macnamara said that at 2.15 a.m. yesterday a plateglass window valued at £16 16/ at Mr. Wade's boot shop was deliberated broken by some unknown person. A constable went to investigate and found Walter stealing shoes from the window. At 3.50 a.m. Dodds was fond with one pair of stolen shoes. Nothing previously was known against either accused. Walder told the magistrate that when he went past the shop he found the window broken. "Being drunk, I went in and got some shoes," he added. "I didn't take any shces out of the shop," said Dodds. "I just found a pair on a seat near the wharf." A naval officer stated that both Walder and Dodds had good records. Neither had been in any trouble previously. The magistrate imposed a fine of £3 on Walder, and fined Dodds £1.
