MINOR FLOODING
STORM IN NORTHLAND RIVER BREAKS ITS BANKS (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Minor flooding, the first in Northland for two years, occurred as a result of a severe north-easterly gale at the week-end. Services were not impaired. Roads were all open to-day and water had receded from lowlying lands on the Whangarei borough boundary, where several houses had been swamped with the backing up of the tide. For the first time in living memory flooding occurred at Houhora, in the Far North. High tides backed up by the gale inundated paddocks and tidal creeks as far inland as Waihopo, and the Waihopo River broke its banks, flooding nearby flat lands. In Whangarei, for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day, .16 of an inch of rain fell.
