FOR UNITY
MAORI WAR SPIRIT APPEAL. BY 1914-18 VETERAN A worthy example of the true spirit of co-operation combined with the fighting spirit of his race is afforded by an appeal to the Maori people by Puhipi H. Tukariri (Matthews), a veteran of the last war. The appeal is made on behalf of the Maori section of the Home Guard, City Battalion, with headquarters at Carlaw Park. The recent appeal of the general officer commanding the New Zealand home forces for the people to stand in unity and co-operation has, he states, the full support of the Maori race. "Let us," he says, in relaying the appeal to all Maori manhood and womanhood, "come forward and support those who already have answered the call of duty. Many of them are now in the firing line. Let us go forward in unity and co-opera-tion and fight for the country of our ancestors." The writer of the appeal further mentions that his personal experiences in the last war from 1914 to miS convinced him that the British Empire had been built up and withstood her enemies because of the unity and co-operation of a free people. We to-day are actively serving the Empire in our great navy, airforce and armies, but the people on the home front had also a vital part to play. The appeal concludes:—"England expects every man to do his duty." Ka moo To mata hi tuna ka ara Te mala hi tana.
