CHEAP SOLDIERS' RATES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. Because of the depletion of the railway operating staff, due to military service, the coal shortage and the heavy call on carriage stock for' transporting the armed forces, ifhas. been found necessary to curtail some-train-travel facilities, particularly at' week-ends. The Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, announced last night that] beginning on Sunday, June 7, excursion tickets for Sunday excursiontrains would be abolished, as also! would be cheap fares in certain! areas for travel to and from the, principal cities at the week-end. i Cheap fares for long-distance travel! to and from race meetings and other special events would also be suspended. Mr. Semple said this did not mean the elimination of Sunday trains, as provision would be made for travel by soldiers at cheap rates, and by the public at ordinary rates.
