FINDING AT INQUEST
ELDERLY WOMAN'S DEATH HEART FAILURE AFTER BURNS (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. A verdict that death was due to heart failure following extensive burns as a result of her clothing becoming ignited by a lighted cigarette, was returned by the coroner, Mr. G. H. Morrish, at the conclusion of the inquest into the death of Mrs. Josephine Alma Kershaw, aged 74. Mrs. Kershaw smoked a cigarette while the remainder of the household was milking, according to the evidence. Unable to move her limbs she habitually discarded the butt of her cigarette on to her clothing.
In giving his verdict the Coroner said that comment in any way imparting blame to any person was outside his jurisdiction, but he would fail in his duty if he did not draw attention to the grave risk taken. Mr. Morrish stressed the necessity for taking adequate care at all times against fire.
