DRIED BUTTERFAT
PLANT IN AUCKLAND
LARGE-SCALE PRODUCTION
Large-scale production of dehydrated butterfat at the Dairy Re ; search Institute's plant at Palmerston North is expected to cease at the end of June, and the work will then be transferred to Auckland, where a two-unit piant is now being set up under the control of the Internal Marketing Division.
This statement was made in an interview by Dr. F. H. McDowall, of the Dairy Research Institute, who stated that the work had now passed the experimental stage. It was felt now that all the difficulties likely to be encountered had been overcome. The regular weekly output at the institute's factory was about 85 tons, equivalent to the treatment of 106 tons of butter.
The two-unit plant in Auckland would deal with more than 10,000 tons of butter each year, but it had to be kept running constantly. There were no factories with adequate space and power requirements for both butter and butterfat production on the scale required to establish
such a process in individual factories.
Dr. McDowall emphasised the importance of the new development as an outlet for any surplus butter, for which shipping might not be available under war conditions and for the lower grades of butter. The indications were that the whole of this season's output of the lower grades of butter would be converted to dry butterfat and exported as such.
