PROMISED AID
BRITAIN AND THE PACIFIC _ "READY TO KI N ANY RISK" (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Suggestions that Britain was no longer interested in the Empire, and that the people of Britain had ceased to care what happened to Australia and New Zealand, were denounced by Sir Harry Batterbee, British High Commissioner, when speaking to the Victoria League to-day. "On behalf of the British Government," said Sir Harry, "I would like to repeat the recent words of the deputy-Prime Minister, Mr. C. R. Attlee, in which he said if Australia or New Zealand was gravely attacked Britain was ready in case of need to run any risk in other areas for the defence of British countries in this part of the Pacific." Sir Harry emphasised the need for continued unity and the avoidance of the sins of democracy, sloth and slackness, and the adoption of the watchword "work and duty," as great effort was still needed.
