FLYING RECORD

AUCKLAND AIRMAN A fine record of wartime flying lies behind the appointment of FlyingOfficer Graham Mandeno, of Auckland, as an instructor with the Royal Air Force training establishment in England. He is the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Mandeno, of 6, Highwic Avenue, Remuera.

Flying-Officer Mandeno was in command of a machine in a big raid on Berlin in which over 200 British planes took part last September, and 39 failed to return. Twice he crossed the North Sea with one of the two engines of his aircraft disabled. While on operations, Flying-Officer Mandeno commanded a Whitley bomber and served with a squadron in the north of England. He took part in many raids on occupied territories and was in attacks on the enemy warships that were until recently at Brest, and on the submarine base at St. Nazaire.

Flying-Officer Mandeno was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, New Plymouth Boys' High School and Auckland University College. When war broke out he was with a British engineering firm installing engines, including some in warships.
