HELP DISTRESS.

FUND FOR LONDON. " HEART TO HEART." DONATIONS TOTAL £17,170. The "Heart to Heart" appeal launched by the "Auckland Star'" last Saturday on behalf of suffering Londoners ha? met with a magnificent response. At II a.m. to-dav the sum of £17.170 had been subscribed. In re>jvm»e to numerous inquiries, the "Auckland Star'' is alile to as~ure all subscribers and intending :-iili;-cril>ei>-to the fund that every penny donatc<l and acknowledged through columns will l>c u-e<l for the relief of civilians in Ijondon. Before gixing lliirasMiranci'. the "Star"" made the mor-t careful inquiries in ofiii-ial quarter> and was given a guarantee that, all provincial quota* notwithstanding, the whole amount raised by the "Heart to Heart apj>eal would he devoted to the relief of London distress.

It obvious that the Auckland quota for this purpose will he exceeded, l»ut the balance of money paid into the •'Heart to Heart"' appeal fund will Inset aside and devoted wholly to the amelioration of distress in London. Thus, all who irive to the "Auckland Star*' fund can be certain that their money will he spent on helping civilianin their dire nece*?sitv.

The bombing of London continues and the toll of human suffering mount* daily, so that none ean question the necessity for sending a* much money as sympathy and generosity dictate. Give to the ' Star" Runners. To ensure that people who can afford to give only «mall donations shall be fully canvassed, runners who distribute the '"Auckland Star"' throughout the city and suburbs have been authorised to collect. Each runner ha» an official subscription sheet on which individual amounts are entered. The runners will pay into the "Auckland Star" the week's collection each Thursday and Friday, and acknowledgment will lie made in I hie column on Saturday. The lir-t of tlict-e acknowledgments is made today and it will be seen that a total of £102 3/0 has been collected this week. Only a few of the runners paid in this week, as the scheme was initiated late in the week. It is expected that if the response next week is on the same generous scale as in to-day's runners" li~t~. a verv large total will be acknowledged next Saturday. It is essentia] that if the "Heart to Heart" appeal is to represent the genero-ity of the whole of Auckland everyone should give according to circumstances. As was said la-t I Saturday when the appeal was launched, this is a call on the child's money-Ik>x equally with the better-circumstanced I person's banking infount. Readers are lurged to have their sn'i>scrption ready for the runner when he calls next week.
