KAURI AND FLAX.
EARLIEST INDUSTRIES. The history of the flax, kauri gum and kauri timber industries in New Zealand was traced by Miss Lucy Cranwell, of the staff of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, in an address at the museum on Sunday afternoon. The lecture was well attended, Mr. E. Vaile presiding. Miss Cranwell spoke of the enrichment of the province as a result of these industries. Kauri gum alone had yielded £16,000,000. She deplored the lack of foresight in dealing with flax and kauri regeneration and pointed out tiiat through young kauri trees not being protected, even in the Waitakeres, everything millable would soon be gone, except in City Council areas. The lecture was illustrated with museum exhibits, including fossil gum illuminated by spotlight.
