CHEERIO SERVICE.

MESSAGES TO TROOPS. CLOSING DATE THURSDAY. Aucklanders have taken the Cheerio service inaugurated by the "Star"' to their hearts, and Saturday *s Sports Edition contained a full page of cheerful, bright messages to the troops abroad from their friends and relatives in the city and country districts. Carefully addressed to the boys designated in the messages, these newspaper* are now on their way to Egypt and England. Thus in a few weeks' time Private Jones, 1214/888, somewhere in the sands of Egypt, will be reading how Ponsonby shaped on Saturday and how the new three-quarttr played, at the same time as he discovers from the Cheerio page that baby has its first tooth. So substantial was the demand made upon the type-setting capacities of the Sports Edition, that an earlier closing date for this week's issue is necessary, and all Cheerios must be in hand not later than 9 p.m. on Thursday next, September 12. So popular has the feature proved that, since the inaugural issue on Saturday last, there has been a constant stream of messages to the ''Star*' office, and there is a likelihood of an even greater numlter for the. second issue. The popular news service for the troops is on an inexpensive basis. For the actual message, of Hi words, there is a fee of 2/C, exclusive of name and rank. When sending the message friends should enclose the full military address so that the '"Star" may send a post-paid copy to the serving man addressed. If longer messages am wished the fee is 9d for each set of five additional words. Special forms for Cheerios are available at the "Star" office, but it is stressed once again that zero hour this week is Thursday night.
