"PICNIC DAY."
DRIVERS AND WATERSIDERS. An appeal by the employers. against the decision of the Disputes' Committee that the workers under the drivers' award in Auckland were entitled to have included in the award holiday a full day as "picnic day," arranged on the same day as was observed for the watersiders' picnic instead of the former half-day on Easter Saturday, was argued in the Arbitration Court yesterday. Mr. W. E. Anderson stated the case for the appellants, and Mr. L. G. Matthews that for the union. A submission that the effect of the decision was to hold up transport in the province for a day, as well as to give, the drivers an extra day's holiday, was controverted by Mr. Matthews, who said that the holiday fell on a day when the wharves were idle, and it affected only such drivers as were engaged in the city area. A section of the drivers concerned, he said, had to work the half-day on Easte ■• Saturday. Ths Court reserved Its decision.
