DEALER FINED.
WOOL PRIVATELY SOLD. BREACH OF REGULATIONS. NAPIER, Monday. For selling wool privately to other dealers contrary to the Wool Purchase Emergency Regulations, 193 ft, David Patterson was fined £5 and costs, £2 4/0, when he was charged "before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate's Court to-day. For the prosecution, Mr. H. B. Lusk said that when wool was sold to the British Government regulations were at once put into force under which it was made illegal for anyone to sell or dispose of wool. Laiter the Government felt there would be great difficulty in getting small lots of wool which farmers had, so a certain number of wool dealers' licenses were issued, entitling those dealers to buy wool dispose of it. They were to send it in for appraisal. Patterson was one of those who had a license, and he made the mistake of purchasing wool and selling it privately to other dealers. In this case Be sold a considerable amount of wool. A heavy penalty was not sought. For defendant, Mr. J. Mason said the war had brought about a crop of emergency regulations. Wool dealing was Patterson's living. The magistrate said severe penalties were provided, and in future they would have to be large.
