DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Devonport Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. Aldridge, presiding. Non-ratable Lands Question. —The Mayor reported that the council was still awaiting the decision of the Government. Communication had been received from the Minister of Defence asking for information as to the probable cost of bituminising Queen's Parade. It was decided to forward this information, and the Mayor was requested to discuss the matter with the Minister when in Wellington next week. . . Rat Island.—The Harbour Board signified its willingness to vest an area of 12 acres of Shoal Bay known as Rat Island in the borough on special terms. Mr. Walsh stated that the Melrose_ Ratepayers' Association had asked for information regarding the creation of a special rating area to develop this area, which is only submerged at high spring tides. It was decided to thank the Harbour Board, to prepare a scheme of reclamation, and to supply the information required for the Melrose area. Current Works.—lt was decided to make a start with the season's tarring and sanding programme, the first streets for treatment being Calliope Road, Alison Avenue, Macky Avenue, Takarunga Road and King Edward Parade. Mays Street was scheduled for road repairs and Church Street and Owen's Road footpaths are to receive attention. A special committee, consisting of Messrs. Ellisdon, Falla and Little, are to consider the condition of the borough's stable and the pound. North Devonport Bus Service.—Messrs. Glassey Bros, asked permission to run their buses round Ngataringa Road. Wesley Street and Regent Street. Reply was authorised that the streets in question nre single traffic routes only and that such usage woud be at the risk of the bus proprietors. Use of Council Chambers.—ln reply to a request for the use of the Council Chambers for the meetings of the Devonport Property-holders' Association, it was decided to decline the application in conformity with the past policy of the council. Narrow Neck Affairs.—Repairs were authorised to the bathing sheds at Vauxhall. The engineer reported satisfactory progress with the sea wall.
