BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presided. Bank Overdraft. —The Bank of New Zealand notified approval of the overdraft limit of £5000. Fire Brigade Carnival.—The secretary of the Birkenhead Borough Band wrote that the band would be playing programmes on the bandstand during the queen carnival,' and requested permission on such occasions for taking up a collection for the general fire brigade fund. This was granted. ! Birkdale Tennis Courts. —The secretary, Mr. W. S. Garratt, wrote that the Birk- ! dale Tennis Club would appreciate assistance in restoring the tennis courts in the j John G. Kay Park. The council agreed to offer to do the work at bare cost of i material and labour. I Shelter at Birkdale. —A donation of £2 10/ was voted towards the cost of a shelter for waiting bus passengers at the junction 'of Tramway, Rangatira, and Huia Roads, the residents having subscribed for the purpose of its erection. Takapuna West.—ln virtue of its ownership of the site of the Birkenhead pumping station, the Takapuna Borough Council requested an expression of opinion of calling the western area of Takapuna "Parklands," in order to obviate the term "back of the lake." The council agreed to support the suggested name. Noxious Weeds Inspector.—The borough foreman, Mr. G. .Giles, was appointed noxious weeds inspector. Urban Farms Rating Bill.—The finance committee reported that consideration had been given to the provisions of the Urban Farms Rating Bill. In order to make clear the probable effect of the measure on Birkenhead, a schedule of selected farms had been prepared, with details of valuation, area,- and rates. The conclusion was arrived at that no action was necessary at present, -this recommendation being adopted by the council, Mr. J. Kerruish dissenting.
