DOG GIVES ALARM.

FIRE AT NEWMARKET. EMPTY HOUSE DAMAGED. The excited barking of a dog attracted neighbours this morning and drew attention to the fact that an unoccupied house at 9, Broadway, Newmarket, was on fire. Good work by the Newmarket Fire Brigade under Captain Watts, assisted by the Parnell Brigade, quickly got the blaze unfler control. The fire had started in the kitchen. Three weeks ago electric light and a gas stove and califont were installed. The electric current was off. The dog, a black retriever, "Jack" by name, belonged to a lady next door. Last night the animal was uneasy and barked frequently. It is thought that somebody had been sleeping in the building.

The house, which was owned by Messrs. Brown Bros, and Geddes, Ltd., was insured for £750 with the South British office.
