FIRE IN TIMBER YARD.
BLAZE AT NEWMARKET.
GOOD WORK BY BRIGADES
INTERRUPTION OF RAILWAY
SIGNALS
Fire broke out in the timber yard of Mr. C. H. Frankliam, Mahuru Street, Newmarket, at half-past eight last evening, but a good save by the Central, Remuera, and Parnell fire brigades prevented the loss of thousands of pounds' worth of timber. The fire started on the side next the railway line, and fortunately to leeward of the main stacks cf timber, ana the brigades soon had it under control. The damage done would be covered by a few hundred pounds. The mill and stocks of timber were insured in the Royal Standard office.
Fire broke out in the main factory this morning, about half an hour after the hands had started work. Some shavings caught alight alongside a machine, but the mill hands quickly put it out with the usual appliances for cases of emergency.
Tho most serious effect of the fire was to burn through the wires on tho railway line—which is only separated from the timber stacks by a comparatively few feet. This interrupted the signalling apparatus, and delayed traffic, including the Main Trunk. A temporary connection was made with stations to the south of Newmarket by using tho Post and Telegraph telephone service as far as Otahuhu. It was after midnight that the Railway Department's own lines wero restored.
