NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. F. Gardner) presided. Water Report.—A report was received detailing water supplied to consumers at meter rates within and outside the town district at' March 31, 1929. They numbered 127, of whom 83 resided within the boards area, and 44 outside the district. Iweiity-seven within the town district had no meters fitted and no check on consumption, whilst there were thirty-six outside the town area with no check on the water used. No charge had been made to the New Lynn school for several years, and it was indicated that a sports ground enjoyed a free supply. The water account showed a net deficit of £1997 17/3. In order that accurate water consumption records should be available the council decided to immediately request the installation of meters of an approved type to the 71 properties on which no water measurement is available. It was also resolved to stop the supply to properties outside the borough in cases where payment is not promptly made for the water used.
Supplementary Loans.—Correspondence was received from the Local Government Loans Board sanctioning (in part) the proposed supplementary drainage sewage loan of £7500, and the Main Highways construction loan of £1089 9/1. The board imposed restrictions in each case, whereby the full amount cannot be raised. The council decided to communicate with the Parliamentary member for the district (Mr. H. G. R. Mason), and the Hon. J. G. Coates, with a request for support in an endeavour to get reconsideration of the matter.
Totara and Todd's Avenue—As requested by the works committee the works foreman supplied an estimate of the cost of construction in concrete from kerb to kerb at Totara and Todd's Avenues, commencing at the railway crossing and linking up with the concrete on the Great North Road, embracing the whole of the Triangle Reserve. The report stated that considerable excavation, averaging 18in deep, would be required between the railway line an-1 Todd's Avenue, in order to allow Bin of concrete and 9in of camber on the finished road. The present storm water system was not adequate, and it would be necessary to complete the kerbing where none existed. Detail costs were as follows: —Excavation work, 980 yds at 2/9, £132; evelen hundred feet of kerbing at 1/7, £87; eleven hundred and eighty yards concrete at £2 16/ per yard, £3304; drainage work, £128; labour and contingencies, £82; total £3733. The council deferred final consideration of this work until Monday next.
Proposed Kelston School.—A communication was received from the local school committee re the proposal to create an infant's school in the Kelston area.. The council endorsed the move' meat and the Mayor was delegated to represent the council at the proposed deputation to the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education. The number of scholars on the roll at the end of the school year -was 745. . ..
Petition.—The council received a petition signed by Mr. C. Goldstone and others objecting to the proposed pottery works in a certain area. It.was decided to obtain legal opinion as to the council's powers in the matter.
Civic Centre.—lt was decided to give iearly consideration to the establishing of ,a' civic centre and the adoption of a brick area.
