TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION.
MATAMATA TO , TAURA^GA. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) MATAMATA, Monday. For some time past overtures have been made to the Postmaster-General with the view to securing a direct telephonic line from Matamata to Tauranga via Kaimai Road. At present there is a gap of about 12 miles and communication between the two places is by the much longer route via Rotorua. The secretary of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce has forwarded a request on the matter to the acting postmaster at Matamata. He states that the completion of the line is most necessary now that an all-weather road has been completed over the Kaimai, which has led to a large increase in traffic. Moreover, with the completion of the railway there is likely to be a larger trade in citrus fruits with Waikato, and it was most necessary that these should be obtainable without undue delay. A deputation from the Maitamata Chamber visited Tauranga last week and has secured the support of the Tauranga Chamber, which is also to make overtures on the matter.
