ONEHUNGA ASSAULT CASE.
HUSBAND ADMITS OFFENCE
ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT,
At the Onehunga Police Court to-day before Messrs. J. E. Green and F. C. Soar, J.P.'s, James B. Stewart, an old offender, pleaded guilty to having assaulted his wife, and also his child under 14 years of age. Sergeant J. A. Cruickshank said the defendant threw a glass at his wife on Saturday night last at Te Papapa. It missed her, and hit the child on the face below the eye. When Constable Hinton was called in to make peace, he found Stewart was under the influence of liquor, and said that when arrested Stewart threatened to "do them all in," and turned on all the gas burners. The glass thrown by Stewart drew blood, which splashed on the child's clothing, and it caused a dent on the corner of the table, where it struck with great force.
Stewart admitted that the trouble arose through drink, and asked for another chance. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, that is, a fortnight on each charge> the sentences to be cumulative.
