REFUSE DESTRUCTOR.

TESTS AT TAKAFU3TA.

SUBURBAN MAYORS SATISFIED.

A final test was carried out at Takapuna on Friday, of the North Shore destructor, which has been installed under contract by Mr. Forrest Marshall to serve the boroughs of Devonport, Takapuna and Northcote. At the conclusion of the test, satisfaction with the results was expressed by the Mayor of Devonport (Mr. E. Aldridge), the Mayor of Takapuna (Mr. J. W. Williamson), the Mayor of Northcote (Mr. A. E. Greensiade), the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. H. Chesson), the borough engineer of Takapuna (Mr. A. Stinger), and other representatives of the local bodies concerned. The building and plant, together with the site in Puriri Street, and the road approaches, have cost approximately £6000. For this outlay the northern boroughs have obtained a destructor with a capacity for consuming 10 tons of refuse per day. The test showed that the plant is capable of exceeding that capacity by 25 per cent. Feature* of the destructor are a *k>ping grate and a dry chamber, which enables the plant to be operated by one man. The heat from the furnace is used for generating steam by means of which the fires are fanned, and a saving of about £200 per year effected. Those who witnessed the test were pleased with the demonstration, not only from the viewpoint of the boroughs, but also from that of public health. The contractor waa commended on the thoroughness with which the installation had been made, and the boroughs were complimented by Dr. Chesson on having adopted a modern method for the disposal of refuse. At present the destructor is operating daily on a shift of eight hours. Should the necessity arise for working a 24-hour shift the destructor v-ill be capable of dealing with 30 tons of refuse, in that time.
