AUCKLAND ROTARY CLUB.

TO-DAY'S MEETING. | e ; medieval UNIVERSITY JJFE. There was the usual full attendance t to-day's weekly lunch meeting of the kuckland Rotary Club, held in the ewis Eady Concert Hall, Mr. Geo. W. -i [utchison (president) .in the chair. ' jnongst the visitors " were: —Messrs. klex Hoyles (InvercargUl), C. E. Jones Christchurch), W. A. Tiinewell (Whagarei), R. W. Wallace (Napier), S. A. jonguet (Wellington), Win. Riddel Palmerston North). A letter was received from Rbtarian Charles Rhodes referring to a hearty welcome given in Honolulu to Auckland (otarians on their way to the conference in Japan. Particular reference was nade to a special tribute of appreciation Aid by Honolulu to the late Aucklaadecretary, Mr. A. J. Hutchinson. The speaker of the day was Rotarian }. O'Shea, who spoke on "Life in a Medieval University." The speaker raced the beginning of university educaion from the early part of the seventh sentury to the thirteenth, when Bologna lad 10,000 students. It. was about the atter date when rigid stipulations were nade decreeing that certain lines of itudy must be undertaken. In the early :imes the; students practically conbroiled the policy of the institutions, jut as municipalities began to make important contributions to the payments of professors they assumed a measure of control through boards of control that were set up. The system of colleges within universities was first instituted in Paris and began by reason of benefactions.. The life and. manners of the students, the basis of the curriculum and the methods of teaching in medieval times were humorously and interestingly dealt with.
