KAURI GUM.
The monthly meeting of the Kauri Gum J Control Board was held on Thursday and Friday last, Mr. M. H. Wyny*ard..presid : ing. One application for a gum buyer's license was approved. Several' applica-" tioris for the. uplittment of the reservation over portions of kauri gum reserves were referred to the board by the Lands Department. After inspection and report it , was resolved to object to the granting of "two of the applications on the ground that the land is still gum bearing. In three cases It was decided to recommend that the applications be granted and the reservation"upiiiied. Further reports ■were made to the board as to the desire of the producers in the Waiharara district in regard to the opening for general digging of the area of 3000 acres at Kahnaumau; formerly leaseit by Peat Oils, Limited, and it was decided to send v copies" o£ the reports . to ■ the Lands Department. ■ Preliminary arrangements were_ made for the erection of an experimental plant to' clean chips and the lower grades of kauri gum in order to test.out the practicability of supplying these grades with a high gum content suitable for use in the varnish and lacquer industries, as well as meeting the requirements ,cf the linoleum industry. ,':.." Reference was. made to statements in the Press as to an alleged loss" on the board's '.operations during the past financial year. Id iv'as reported that these allegations are without any foundation, the board's finances being in a healthy condition, while its operations in the brokerage business as agent for the diggers had been steadily increasing from month to month.
