Some good golf was seen in the opening day's play of the South Auckland men's golf championship at St. Andrew's links yesterday. A score of 176 qualified a player for the South Auckland championship and 188 for the.St. Andrew's championship. Entries numbered 41. In winning the Waikato championship, J. L. Black (Otorohanga), plus 2, played steady golf, his score being 73, 77 —150. The medal handicaps, morning and after, noon, were won by G. Fitzgerald (Matamata) and C. Blundell (Te Awamutu) with scores of 87—19—69 and 93—10 —83 respectively. * The following qualified for the South Auckland championship: J. L. Black, 73, 77—150; J. M. Hockin, 77, 83—160; R. O. WANGANUI TOURNAMENT.
THE QUALIFYING ROUND. WANGANUI, Thursday. Ideal weather prevailed to-day lor play in the qualifying rounds of the Wanganui Club's championship tourney. A large field of 120 competitors included visitors from Taranaki, Auckland,' Hawke's Bay, Manawatu and Wellington. Though the scores were not quite up to the high standard of last year, some fine play was seen. L. Cathro, of Castlecliff, headed the list of 16 who qualified for the championship, while Goss, of Wanganui, and D. C. Collins, of Featherston, followed him closely. The following 16 qualified for the first round of the championship, which will be commenced this morning:—L. Cathrd (Castlecliff), 159; J. Goss (Wanganui), 161; D. NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.
At the monthly meeting on Monday of the New- Zealand Golf Council, Mr. W. K. Gill presiding, it was stated by Sir. A. L>. Duncan, who has just returned from Australia, that it is considered there will be \-<>ry great difficulty in the future in getting State teams to Come over for the KirkWindeyer -Cup, contest, and that it is generally thought over ibere that the competition should be made One for an all Australian team against New Zealand, or else for New South Wales against New Zealand.
Forthcoming tournaments advised to the association are as follows: New Zealand Championships (Dunedin), October 12 to 20; 'North Otago (Oamaru). October 22; geafledd <( Wangainui), October £0, 22 and £3;'Manawatu (Palmerston North), October 22, 23 and 24; Wanaka (Pembroke), October 22; Hawera, October 20 and 22.
GOLF AT MATIEKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, Thursday Fine'weather was experienced at Matierp for the play-off of the first round of the men's competition for the president's trophy The net Scores were as follows :— A. Rosa. 37 ; J. Ross, 39; R. Alanson. 44; W. Pratt, 44 : A. Ross, 47; A. Rhynd, 51. The links are in good order, and there seems to be every likelihood of this condition being maintained for some time. It is hoped to, keep the links open for play throughout the summer months.
