GOLI CHAMPIONSHIP.
N.Z. LADIES' TITLE. WON BY MISS CHRYSXALL. A STUBBORN CONTEST. SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES. The New Zealand ladies golf championship meeting was brought to a close at Middleirtore yesterday afternoon when Miss D. Chryatall, of Christchurch, beat Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton, by 2 up and 1 to play at the end Of a stubbornly contested 36-round final. The interest was sustained right to the 3oth hole, for Mrs. Williams made a good recovery in the afternoon, but failed to hold her improved position. Both competitors tailed to reproduce their best form. The tournament proved to be one of the most successful in the history of New Zealand ladies' championships and the gallery of spectators yesterday afternoon was stated to be the largest that has yet followed a ladies' match in the Dominion.
DETAILS OF PLAY,
MRS. WILLIAMS' GOOD RECOVERY. When the players drove off at 1.30 p.m. for the first hole of the second round there was a gallery of spectators which numbered something like 700. Mrs. Williams had a stiff task ahead for Miss Chrystall is too good a player to have to give three holes in 1& to. Mrs. Williams made things worse by missing a two-foot putt for a half at the first. Mrs. Williams won the next hole, but good putting gave the next to Miss Chrystall and she was again 4 up. Getting into trouble .in the drain, Miss Chrystall gave up the fourth. Mrs. Williams, after a good brassy shot, bad a good chance to win the fifth, but her short game failed her and Miss Chrystall was 4 up at the fifth. At this stage The mashie shots of both players were poor and Mrs. Williams was off her putting game. Going td the sixth hole both players sliced into the rough by the Tamaki. Mrs. Williams won the hole. She also won the seventh by holding out a 15ft putt. The eighth was halved in orthodox fours. Miss Chrystall got into the gully with her second for the ninth and Mrs. Wililams, winning the hole, turned for home one down. She had made a good recovery. At the tenth Mrs. Williams was badly bunkered, apd going to the eleventh Miss Chrystall scattered the crowd with a pulled drive. Mrs. Wil* liams played a poor second, -but sunk an Bft putt and won the hole. A brilliant second gave Miss Chrystall the twelfth, and for her tee shot at the thirteenth Mrs. Williams was applauded. Miss Chrystjtlt ■ got into the sand and gave up the hole. Miss Chrystall one up. Miss Chrystall outdrove her opponent by 30 yards at the next and Mrs. Williams was left with an Bft putt for a half. She failed. Mrfc. Williams got into serious trouble playing to the fifteenth. Both players pulled into the trceft. Miss Chrystall got out well and Mas on the green with her second. Mrs. Wililams' second went into a gum tree and her third also stopped by a branch of the same tree. Miss Chrystall won the hole and the game was dormy three. Mrs. Williams played a beautiful second to the next and, winning the hole, the game was dormy two. Going to the seventeenth Miss Chrystall's second was on the green, pin high. Mrs. Williams put down a great putt to halve in four. Miss Chrystall thud won the game 2 and 1 and the New Zealand championship.
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.
VISITORS' APPRECIATION". At tlie conclusion of play the prizes won during the tournament were presented. Mr. P. UptOn, president of the Auckland Golf Club, said no better evidence of the success of the tournament was required than the large number of people present that afternoon. Miss CKrygtall, who had just won the championship, was in the seihi-fiiials taken to the 20th hole by a young player, who, he was bold enough to prophesy, would herself win the championship before she was many years older. He referred to the excellent performances of Miss Kay and also to the record made by Mrs. Hoikingg. Continuing, he said he wished to express a word of appreciation to Mr. A. Bhind for the admirable condition of the course and the manner in which he lent his aid to the tournament committee. As to the conduct of the tournament, Mr. Upton expressed his sense of obligation to the capable manner in which Miss N. McCormick had carried out the duties of secretary. As president -of the Auckland Golf Club he would like to j say how very delighted they all were j that the championship meeting had been held in Auckland this year. . The local players should benefit by the holding of the championships here. Cheers were given for Miss J. Reid, captain of the Auckland Ladies' Golf Club, and Mrs. Upton then presented the prizes to the winners. Mrs. Williams, on behalf of the visitors, said it was the best organised championship tournament it had beciv Iter luck to be present at. As to the course, she c could not say too much in praise of its condition. The greens were in good order and the fairway amazingly good. - ;", v : * Mrs. Russell Grace presented Miss Reid and Miss McCormick each with a token of appreciation from the visitore. Thi proceedings were brought to a termination with cheers by the visitors for the local golffrs.
MEDAL FOURSOME HANDICAP.
A medal foursome, handicap was; played yesterday, the winners being; Mrs. M. Arthur and Miss J. Masters. The second prize-was won by Miss. M. Macfarlane and Miss K. Bridled, .while Miss O. OTAHUHU CLUB. The annual ball and presentation of prizes in connection with the Otabuhu Club took place on Wednesday evening, when there was a large attendance. Interspersed with the dancing several musical Items were rendered by Mesdames Massey and Murdoch, Dr. Valentine, Mr. Keador, and Miss Wyiic, with Miss Moffat presiding at the piano. The sealed hole competition was won by Mrs. Elliott, the senior eclectic by Miss White, and the junior eclectic by Miss O'Callaghan. The club, trophy for the three best scores out of four rounds was won by Mrs. Langford, whose net scores were: 74, 85, 87; total 246. The L.G.U. bronze medal was won by Miss Rhind. To-morrow (closing day) the usual competitions will be held in the morning, start in# at 10 o'clock. f A match, ladies v. men, will take place during. the- afternoon.
