SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The ; annual ball in aid of the funds of the Matiere sub-branch of, the Plunket Society was a very successful function. - The haU was artistically decorated by the ladies' committee, and the. dancing floor was taxed to its capacity. Much of the success of the evening was due to the music played by Mrs. Armstrong, Miss P. Margan, and Mr. A. K. Margan. ••* ; • A meeting of the Bayswater>Belmont Women's' Society was held yesterday afternoon, when Mrs. F. Gaudin presided over a f good attendance l of members. A report of the work done during the past four months stated that 200 new articles; a baby's cot and the sum tof two guineas had been handed to the Hospital Auxiliary. During the afternoon 'Mr. J. Greville addressed the gathering. • • • * The monthly meeting of the Henderson Women's Institute (which took the form of an open night) was held on the evening of Tuesday, in the Foresters' Hall, when there was a large attendance of members and their friends. In the absence of the president (Mrs. Dudly Dorman), who was away on organising work for the institute, the vice-presi-dent (Mrs. Stuart) took the chair. A debate on " Should Women Enter Parliament? " was conducted by the W.E.A. Mr. Richmond acted as chairman. Mr Martin, seconded by Mrs. Moore, took the affirmative, while Mr. Atkinson, supported by Mr. Fairburn, took the negative side. The debate was listened to with great interest, and caused much amusement. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the debaters. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Harwood and Mrs. F. Peutt. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. ° " • • • • One of the most enjoyable socials held in connection with the Holy Trinity Church, Otahuhu, took place last evening in the Public Hall. The main part of the building was used for dancing, while the supper room was. utilised for progressive five hundred. There was a very lar/sre attendance. The object of the function was to raise funds for the equipment of the men's and'sports stall at the forthcoming bazaar. Excellent music was supplied for the dancing by Mrs. F. Andrews' orchestra. A competition for dancing in the spot Waltz was b won by Mr. B. Beard and Miss E. Walb, er> I" the Monte Carlo waltz Mr. R Ellery and Miss Greenwood were the fe, : successful partners. The monthly meeting of the Avondale Women's Club was held in Blockhouse Bay Picture Hall on Tuesday, October 2, when the president, Mrs. Kealy, welcomed a number of visitors from Avondale, and several new members were enrolled. A full report of the last meeting of the National Council of Women was read by Miss Newton, and a number of remits sent forward for discussion were endorsed. In the absence through illness of Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, who was to have spoken on "Women in Politics." the afternoon was devoted to a programme of musical and elocutionary items provided by Mrs. John Parry, of New Lynn, and Mrs. Douglas McGregor, of Auckland, Mrs Waygood, of Avondale, acting as accompanist. Mrs. Parry sang charmingly a number of songs, including such old favourites as "The Old-fashioned Town" and "Christina's Lament," and generously responded to the many encores demanded; while Mrs. McGregor, who so ably took the leading part in the Little Theatre Society's recent production of "The Round Table," contributed a number of delightful recitations, which were also deservedly encored. On the motion of Mrs. E. Armstrong the visitors were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the exceptionally pleasing entertainfent they had provided at such short notice. Tea, served by Mesdames Macfarlane and Lamb, accompanied by the usual halfhour of social intercourse, brought a very successful afternoon to a close.
