Viscount Hampden, chairman of the New Zealand National Mortgage and Agency Co., is sailing on October 12 on a three months' visit to the Dominion. Viscount Hampden, Brigadier-General Thomas Walter Brand, was born in January, 1809. He was educated at Eton, and then at Trinity College, Cambridge. Le entered the Army in 1889, and served in the South African War, during the yean 1809-1901. He was mentioned in dispatches, and received the Queen's medal with six clasps. He served in the Great War during the whole of its duration, and was mentioned in dispatches seven times. He- was made a temporary Brigadier? General, and created C.B. in 1917, C.M.G. in 1915. He was a Lord-in-Waiting in 1924.
